The area model is a visual strategy that breaks numbers into tens and ones to make multiplication easier.

When using the area model to multiply 23 * 45, you break 23 into 20 + 3 and 45 into 40 + 5, then multiply each part.

The area model helps with visual understanding, breaks problems into smaller steps, and helps you work with place value.
