Composing and Decomposing Numbers to 100,000

3rd Grade90 minutesTEK 3.2A

Learning Objective

I can break apart and put together numbers up to 100,000 using different combinations.

Key Concepts

The normal way that we see a number is called standard form, like the number 789.

Expanded form shows the values of each digit, such as 700 + 80 + 9, while expanded notation multiplies the digit by its place value, such as (7 x 100) + (8 x 10) + (9 x 1).

When decomposing numbers, 34,096 in standard form can be written as 30,000 + 4,000 + 90 + 6 in expanded form or (3 x 10,000) + (4 x 1,000) + (9 x 10) + (6 x 1) in expanded notation.
