Exploring the Nervous System
Learning Objective
I can describe the main functions of the nervous system.
Key Concepts
The nervous system can be divided into two general regions: the central nervous system (CNS), which includes the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system (PNS), which includes all other components.
The hindbrain includes the medulla, pons, and cerebellum, which regulate functions like breathing, heart rate, balance, and movement coordination.
Neurons communicate with each other through a process called action potential, which involves a rapid change in electrical charge along the axon and the release of neurotransmitters at the synapse.
