Learning Objective
I can identify the major anatomical structures of a sheep heart and explain their functions.
- 1
The heart's chambers include the right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, and left ventricle, which are separated by atrioventricular valves.
- 2
The tricuspid valve (or right atrioventricular valve) and the bicuspid (or mitral or left atrioventricular valve) are attached to chordae tendineae and papillary muscles to prevent backflow of blood.
- 3
The three layers of the heart are the epicardium, the thick myocardium, and the thin endocardium, with plate-like structures called trabeculae found within the muscle.
