Naming Transition Metal Compounds
Learning Objective
I can name ionic compounds containing transition metals using Roman numerals to indicate the charge of the metal cation.
Key Concepts
When writing out ionic compounds, always list the cation first, then the anion.
If the cation is a transition metal from the d block, refer to its oxidation state using Roman numerals.
For polyatomic ions with different numbers of oxygen atoms, the one with more oxygen uses the suffix -ate, and the one with less oxygen uses the suffix -ite.
