Equations and Problem Solving
Learning Objective
I can create and solve algebraic equations to model and solve real-world problems.
Key Concepts
In algebraic word problems, it is important to assign variables to represent unknown quantities and then construct equations based on the given information.
When solving word problems with consecutive multiples, if the first number is X, then the next consecutive multiple of three would be X + 3, and the one after that would be X + 6.
If J = R + 6 and 2R + 3J = 68, you can substitute R + 6 for J in the second equation and then distribute and simplify to solve for R.

1. Define the terms variable and equation as they relate to algebraic problem-solving.
2. Explain the general strategy for translating a word problem into an algebraic equation.
3. John has twice as many apples as Mary. Together they have 27 apples. Write an algebraic equation to represent this situation, using 'j' for the number of apples John has and 'm' for the number of apples Mary has.
