Rational Exponents and Properties

11th Grade30 minutesCCSS HSN-RN.A.2

Learning Objective

I can rewrite expressions with rational exponents using the properties of exponents.

Key Concepts

When you have a fraction to a negative exponent, it is the same as the reciprocal to a positive exponent.

When multiplying terms with the same base, you should add the exponents, and when dividing terms with the same base, you should subtract the exponents.

x to the power of 1/n can be written as the nth root of x.

Practice Questions

This lesson includes 3 practice questions to reinforce learning.

1. Rewrite the expression (8)^(2/3) using radical notation and simplify.

2. Simplify the expression: (x^(1/2) * x^(3/2)) / x^(1/4). Write the final answer with a positive exponent.

3. Rewrite the expression (3x)^(2/5) in radical notation. Then, rewrite the expression so that the exponent applies only to x.
