Solving Measurement Conversions with Proportions

7th Grade45 minutes

Learning Objective

I can use proportions and conversions factors to convert measurements between different units.

Key Concepts

To convert 132 pounds into kilograms, you can use the conversion factor that 1 kilogram equals 2.2 pounds. Using dimensional analysis, set up the equation so that pounds cancels out, leaving you with kilograms. The answer is 60 kilograms.

To convert 7 fluid ounces into milliliters, you can use the conversion factor that 1 fluid ounce equals 30 milliliters. Using ratio and proportion, set up your known ratio on one side, and then set up your unknown ratio with X representing the unknown value. The answer is 210 milliliters.

To convert 40 milliliters to teaspoons, you can use the conversion factor that 5 milliliters equals 1 teaspoon. Using either dimensional analysis or ratio and proportion, set up the equation so that you are solving for teaspoons. The answer is 8 teaspoons.
