Finding the Main Idea
Learning Objective
I can determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details.
Key Concepts
The topic of a paragraph is the simplest description of what the paragraph is about, while the main idea expresses the most general idea that the writer wants the reader to take away.
The main idea is always stated in complete sentences, and it can often be found in the first, middle, or last part of a paragraph.
When trying to identify the main idea, ask yourself what is the main thing that is being said about the topic.
