Key Concepts
Jaundice is a common sign in newborns, often appearing a day or two after birth and resolving within about a week.
To assess jaundice, press a finger on the baby's forehead, nose, sternum, elbows, wrists, knees, or ankles to observe the lemony yellow tinge when the skin blanches.
Severe jaundice is indicated by the presence of a lemony colored tinge in the nail beds of the hands or feet, requiring immediate bilirubin testing.
