Calculating Slope from Coordinates

9th Grade60 minutes

Learning Objective

I can calculate the slope of a line given two points on the coordinate plane.

Key Concepts

The slope, represented by the letter m, is calculated by rise over run, which can be thought of as the change in y over the change in x.

The formula to find the slope between two points is m = (y₂ - y₁) / (x₂ - x₁), where (x₁, y₁) and (x₂, y₂) are the coordinates of the two points.

A negative slope indicates that the line is going downhill from left to right, while a positive slope indicates the line is going uphill from left to right.
